She plays white women for a living
Reblogging for Rochelle
I acknowledge that she’s said a lot of problematic things lately.
Years ago, I can’t remember the magazine, but I read an interview that she and her sister, Kidada, did. It was a really great interview exploring how the differences in their features affected their experiences growing up.
I identified with her (and her sister) because of the fact that she is biracial, just as I am.
The fact of the matter is she plays white women is because those are the only kinds of roles she can pass off as. She talked about it in the article how she would get rejected for POC/African American roles because they would always tell her that she was too light-skinned.
YES, she is at a great advantage because of her mother and father being Peggy Lipton and Quincy Jones. YES, she is a at a great advantage over her sister because she can pass off as a white woman, while her sister cannot. She has many privileges.
BUT you very well know that the truth is that even if she did play an African American character y’all would complain that she’s too light-skinned anyway!
why are you defending rashida jones tho? she wrote and stared in a rom com and didn’t even bother to cast one person of color aside from herself AND the only mention of her characters blackness is when she made a joke about zooecia sounding like her hoocie cousins name. So please stop. She’s not here for us.
Celeste and Jesse Forever?
Yeah I know about the film.
She could have done a lot with the power she had with direction of it, casting choices, the script, etc.
That I definitely acknowledge.
I don’t defend the crap she spews out especially as of lately.
I’m just acknowledging that she gets the roles that she plays because she passes off as white.
I’m disappointed in the fact that she had the opportunity to write a great leading biracial woman but she didn’t.
Because of the roles she was rejected for, she should know that range for biracial characters is very limited.
But don’t deny that she would be accepted for an African American role cus like I said, y’all would complain about her not looking the part.
She can accept or reject the roles she auditions for or receives, but I’m pretty sure her choices are limited besides the constant white roles she does get.
What does black folks complaining about her being to light to play a black woman have to do with anything tho? She had the opportunity to CREATE a role for herself and what she created was fluffy whitewashed bullshit that treated her blackness as a punchline.
